Thursday Purseday led us to Marks and Spencer, as during our reading this morning we discovered their profits are up because of some Brazilian booty coverings. However, we had a little peruse of their rails and we found some stinkingly* good stuff, so good in fact that it hurt our little peepers.
However, we are saving those delicious finds for another day, as right about now we are all about baggage of a good kind get a load of these! Well, for this Thursday purseday I’m stepping out of the third person to say that the reason why I picked these bags is because they remind me of my mum. I am a big fat momma’s girl and when I was little and we went to parties; my mother, my mother the clutch bag queen always had one of these.
Apart from a little purse her bag would always have a tube of lipcote, some lipstick, a packet of polo mints, and an embroidered handkerchief. And whenever the boredom of whatever we were at set in – she would fish out the polo mints. My little hands would make a grab for them, and I would swiftly shove them in my mouth. Then I would play the polo mint game: I would try and get the mint as thin as possible to see if I could get it over my tongue without breaking it.
I never want to go backwards: life is all about going forward, I love my present and as the saying goes – the past is a foreign country and they do things differently there* (That’s a bit of L P Hartley). But, seeing this bag and remembering being a little girl, holding my mum’s hand, and our little outings, sparked off a massive wave of nostalgia about the way we were then. When I was just a kid routing around my mother’s handbag – with tomorrow’s thoughts barely stretching to what was for lunch at school the next day.
My mum is my best friend, cheerleader, and mega supporter. And I love that she goes to the library and reads my blog, and tells me that she likes what I wrote. It’s so funny that even though I am grown, approval from her is the alpha and omega – it means everything.
So this Thursday to the first best friend I ever had, I just want to say that I love you.
