What got you into photography?
I majored in Humanities but started photojournalism classes because I wanted to tell stories visually. I landed a part-time gig shooting for a local music publication which eventually became full-time staff. The managing editor even hired me to shoot his wedding. MTV bought the magazine and made me chief photographer. The invaluable lessons, contacts, and portfolio material of this experience early gave me the skills required to go full-time independent, shooting for a wide variety of clients in the fashion, editorial, music, and corporate niches. Now my focus is weddings.
What is a typical day like for you?
Weekdays, its marketing, post-processing, meeting clients, scouting venues, and improving my craft. I have a studio manager who takes care of all the planning, booking, and logistical stuff. Weekends, I’m out shooting weddings, sessions, events, or personal projects.
Which has been your favourite photo shoot to date?
After 10 years, too many of those to list. Gaining life experience by photographing interesting people and events is sort of the whole point of this job.
But one thing that might be useful for me to relate to new photographers, is that the Eddie Adams Barnstorm Workshop was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.
Where do you get your inspiration?
From my clients. Every individual has experiences and qualities I admire. Real lives, personalities, and relationships are pretty inspiring when you get down to it.
If you could take a picture of anyone who would it be and why?
My best friend DJ was one of the most creative and outgoing people I’ve ever known, but he passed away before I was into shooting. I would love to have shot a really strong portrait of him.
What are you interests outside of photography?
Hiking, biking, and traveling with my fiancee. I enjoy museums, galleries, bookstores, and shows.
Do you collect anything?
No, running this wedding photography business makes me enough of a packrat.
If you weren’t a photographer what would be your Plan B?
There is no Plan B. I’m always going to be a photographer.
But if weddings become unsustainable or lose their appeal, I would shoot assignments related to travel, art, and indigenous cultures.
