The Six Track Sessions

We have a love hate relationship with Dapper Paper, we love their work but we hate that they are so good. However, in an effort to break bread, and broker creative peace. We thought the way to seal our love would be through a mixtape. So here it is the six track wedding pick (ahem seven tracks but we will get to that) from these purveyors of super fine paper produce.

1. Sleeping at Last: “Umbrellas”.
This is one of the most beautiful songs about real love by one of my favorite bands, Sleeping at Last.  It brings tears to my eyes from the opening lines “I’ll make you mine if you would have me.
With a silver ring that will hug you tight, Our life begins. Our life begins with this” to the kicker “you were meant for amazing things.”
I think the lead singer Ryan, is one of the best lyricist I have ever heard, it’s basically poetry put to amazing instrumentation.  Our wedding party entered in on this song and then (i always knew i wanted to since i heard this song) I entered in on the big build at   3:16 in the song, at our wedding.
We met them right before we got engaged at one of their shows and we were SO close to getting them to actually play at the wedding but they had a tour conflict so we ended up getting a bunch of our friends/family who are musicians to play and sing and it was awesome.

2. Phil Wickham:  ”Divine Romance”
This song speaks for itself because it’s about a much grander love than just a man and woman.  When you fall in love and get married, you can only strive and pray to love as selflessly as the Greatest Love and the Greatest Romance ever known.  We actually had this song at our wedding while we took communion.  It was intimate and beautiful.

3.  Feist:  ”I Feel it All” .  We actually exited our wedding to this song.  It was like a scene out of a movie (which is how I hear music, in scenes and moments) because as soon as that beat drops in the beginning, we were walking down the stairs.  It was totally perfect and SO fun!  Everyone loved it.  I love Feist.  And this song is just amazing because in those first few seconds of hearing it, you can not help but smile and want to move or dance or something.  It’s just perfect and cheery.

4.  Ryan Adams: “Desire” Ryan Adams is my BOY.  He has been one of my favorites since I bought his Gold album in high school (one of my first albums along with Pete Yorn).  Being from North Carolina, we consider him our hometown hero.  He actually formed the band Whiskeytown in Raleigh, where we live.  This song is just romantic, obviously.  And I think it’s lovely. When Chris and I were dating, we were long distance, so we made a lot of mixes for each other while driving back and forth. This song was definitely on one of them.  I love the line “you know me”.  There’s just something about someone really knowing you and still loving you.

5. Fleet Foxes:  ”Ragged Wood” this song just sounds like love to me.  Bright, joyful, a chorus of singers.  what more could you want?

6. Phoenix:  ”1901”  Okay, this one is for smiles and fun.  I have been a long time fan of Phoenix, and this newest album is no exception.  If this song doesn’t make you want to move or at least spark your interest, you might not like music.  This riff is so freaking catchy and Chris and i LOVE it.  We listen to it often.  I could totally see people jumping around and singing along to this in an “indie” dance kind of way.  If we hadn’t had a motown band at our reception, we would have filled our playlist with songs like this!

In an unprecedented break from our normal mixtape rules Dapper Paper coerced us into giving them an extra song, Elizabeth flew all the way from the states with a Molotov cocktail in one hand and said in a very sinister voice that she could make things happen. She also said what pretty design hands we had and it would be a shame if anything happened to them. She had a white cat with her that she stroked in a manic fashion while giving us the stare! For those above reasons and our fear of violence Dapper paper get a seventh song.

7. The Postal Service:  ”Brand New Colony” This is such a modern love song.  ”i’ll be the phonograph that plays your favorite album back as you’re lying there drifting off to sleep”, and “i’ll be the platform shoes and undo what heredity’s done to you, you won’t have to strain to look into my eyes”. (i love this lyrics because i’m short and Chris is tall).  This song is just what you want to do when you fall in love, go off and be together in your own little universe or colony.  We love some Ben Gibbard and actually had our first kiss at one of his shows, so The Postal Service is close to our hearts.
